What to Pack for Amsterdam in the Fall

Packing Guide for Amsterdam in the Fall

Fall is one of the best times to visit Amsterdam. The temperatures are still good for being outdoors and the hordes of summer tourists have mostly gone home. You own’t freeze your nose off while standing in line at Anne Franke House but a slight nip in the air is just enough reason to duck into a cafe for a cappuccino and slice of Dutch apple pie. And is there anything prettier than canal views with leaves blazing in red and gold?

Whether you’re visiting for a long weekend or a longer trip, with just a few staples, you can look chic and comfortable all at the same time. Autumn can be a confusing time when planning a travel wardrobe. Will it be light sweater weather or knit cap and scarf weather? So what to pack for Amsterdam in the fall?

Key Pieces

The average temperatures in Amsterdam in the fall are the low teens so you shouldn’t need to bundle up but it’s definitely not shorts weather anymore. You need to be prepared for all kinds of weather: rain, cool nights, the odd warm afternoon.

Amsterdam is a pretty laid back city so unless you’re heading out for some fine dining or to the Concertgebouw (which I recommend) you won’t feel the need to dress up much, but any urban travel girl worth her salt should have a versatile dress just in case. The black shift dress rom Old Navy can be dressed up with heels and jewelry or dressed down with sneakers and denim jacket for visits to the Van Gogh Museum.

I visited in early October and my favourite thing to do was just walk along the canals and soak up the atmosphere. A low heeled boot is perfect for looking polished but comfortable.

Rain is no stranger to Autumn so I’d pack an umbrella and classic camel trench. Even if it’s not raining you’ll look put together with the jacket that never goes out of style. Burberry is the gold standard but there’s a trench out there for every style and budget.
